In the middle of the Danube delta lies Tichilesti, Europe’s last leper station. Ceaucescu had the leprosy patients of Romania transferred to Tichilesti paying hush money in the form of better disability benefits. Over the following decades a secluded community developed. Today leprosy is no longer contagious but the patients still live in Tichilesti, forgotten by the rest of the world.
